What is zoledronic acid injection?
ZOLEDRONIC ACID (Zometa®) reduces the release and breakdown of calcium from bone. It is used when you have a high amount of calcium in your blood to lower the blood calcium levels. High blood calcium levels can make you confused and tired and cause stomach pain and muscle weakness. Zoledronic acid helps to relieve these symptoms. Zoledronic acid is also used to prevent complications of cancer that has spread to the bone. Generic zoledronic acid injection is not available.
What should I tell my health care provider before I take this medicine?
They need to know if you have any of these conditions: aspirin-sensitive asthma dental disease kidney disease an unusual or allergic reaction to zoledronic acid, other medicines, foods, dyes, or preservatives pregnant or trying to get pregnant breast-feeding
How should I use this medicine?
Zoledronic acid is for injection or infusion into a vein. It is given by a healthcare professional, usually in a hospital or clinic setting.
Contact your pediatrician or health care professional regarding the use of this medicine in children. Special care may be needed.
What if I miss a dose?

What drug(s) may interact with zoledronic acid?
antiinflammatory drugs (NSAIDs, such as ibuprofen and naproxen) certain antibiotics given by injection certain water pills or diuretics (examples include Bumex®, Demadex®, Lasix®, or furosemide) cyclosporine parathyroid hormone tacrolimus teriparatide thalidomide
Tell your prescriber or health care professional about all other medicines you are taking, including non-prescription medicines, nutritional supplements, or herbal products. Also tell your prescriber or health care professional if you are a frequent user of drinks with caffeine or alcohol, if you smoke, or if you use illegal drugs. These may affect the way your medicine works. Check with your health care professional before stopping or starting any of your medicines.
What side effects may I notice from receiving zoledronic acid?
Side effects that you should report to your prescriber or health care professional as soon as possible: constant jaw pain, especially burning or cramping eye inflammation, pain, or vision change muscle cramps or weakness pain or difficulty passing urine very stiff muscles, unable to move easily
Side effects that usually do not require medical attention (report to your prescriber or health care professional if they continue or are bothersome): bone pain confusion constipation fever joint pain loss of appetite nausea, vomiting redness, pain, swelling, or irritation at the injection site tiredness
What should I watch for while taking zoledronic acid?
Visit your prescriber or health care professional for regular checks on your progress. Your prescriber or health care professional may schedule blood tests to make sure you do not have unwanted side effects. It may take 7 days before seeing the full benefits of this medicine.
Depending on your condition, it may be important to maintain a specific intake of calcium and vitamin D in your diet while receiving this medicine. You should not exceed the recommended amount for your condition. Talk with your doctor about your dietary or supplement needs. Do not take supplements without your doctor's advice.
Where can I keep my medicine?
This medication is only given in a hospital or clinic. You will not keep this medicine at home.
